Frequently Asked Questions for Donors

What is Mi Casa Housing?
Mi Casa is an all volunteer 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing long-term affordable housing for families who are low-income. Mi Casa's homes are scattered throughout quality neighborhoods in the Puyallup, Sumner and Edgewood areas. This keeps families near quality jobs, shopping centers, and schools and away from stereotypic project-type housing.

Whom Does Mi Casa Serve?
Mi Casa caters to people whose income from work or other sources is too low to rent in the gen
eral area. Housing plays a critical role in providing stability to poor families. When families lack affordable housing, there can be terrible consequences and often these families fall into homelessness. Our tenants qualify based on the low or very low income designations as determined by the an income that is 50% below the median wage in the area of which they live. Mi Casa has capacity to serve up to 164 men, women and children.

What does Mi Casa Do?

Mi Casa owns duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes which they maintain, manage, and lease to those in need in our local community. To help in this process, Mi Casa retains a professional property manager, Kalles Properties Inc., to manage the buildings and tenant needs on an ongoing basis.

How is Mi Casa funded?
The majority of Mi Casa's monthly funding comes from the rental income from the tenants of the homes and apartments. The rest of the funding is provided by a combination of grants and private donations. Click here to see an example of how this money is utilized. Mi Casa's future goals are to receive enough money through fundraisers and donations to increase the number of owned buildings to provide for even more families in eastern Pierce County.

How Can I help?
There are plenty of ways and opportunities to support Mi Casa. Donations are vital to Mi Casa.

Donations contribute to maintenance of homes, providing stipends to families who can't make rent, and towards a savings account being utilized for the purchase of more duplexes, townhouses, or fourplex apartment buildings.

Volunteers are always welcome to come and meet the volunteer Board of Directors. WE ARE POWERED BY VOLUNTEERS!  Volunteers can serve in several administrative duties such as participation on our tenant committee, marketing/public relations committee, accounting and finance committee, properties committee, as well as executive committee. We hope in the future there will be increased volunteer opportunities during fundraising events as well. To volunteer please visit our volunteer page.
